The Inspiring Story of Kaman Siboro : Early Life & Big Dreams
Kaman Siboro, the founder of Universal BPR, a rural bank (hereinafter “BPR”, from the Indonesian Bank Perekonomian Rakyat) in five provinces across Indonesia, is widely recognized for his perseverance and integrity. Born in Pematang Siantar, North Sumatra, on October 26, 1958, he grew up in economic hardship, but that never stopped him from dreaming big. Through hard work and dedication, he earned scholarships that allowed him to continue his studies in Java. With only a one-way ticket on the Tampomas ship, he left his hometown with great hopes for a brighter future. But life in a new place was full of challenges. At one point, he had to pawn his favorite pair of jeans just to afford a meal, and even borrowed money for a plate of rice at a food stall. Despite the hardships, his passion for learning and achieving his dreams never faded.

Entering the Banking Industry
In 1981, he began his career as a Management Trainee at a commercial bank, quickly earning a reputation for his integrity. While many accepted bribes, he firmly refused.

"When others were tempted by gifts, I chose to walk away,"
he recalled.

After completing his contract, he continued his career at Bank Universal as a credit officer, where he met Stephen Satyahadi, a seasoned banker and President Director of Bank Universal at the time. Together, they created a partnership program that provided farmers with access to capital and training, helping them build better lives and send their children to school—even abroad.

Rising from Crisis & Building Universal BPR
The 1997–1998 Asian financial crisis severely impacted the banking sector, including Bank Universal, which was forced to merge with another institution. As a result, the farmer partnership program was discontinued. Amid the hardship, Kaman Siboro did not give up. He ran a basic food business to survive, before deciding to pursue his mission once again by establishing Universal BPR. Using his personal assets and retirement funds, he built Universal BPR from the ground up, once again partnering with Stephen Satyahadi to bring their shared vision to life: to create real social impact through inclusive financial access for the community.

The Journey Continues
Today, Universal BPR has grown into one of Indonesia’s most trusted rural banks, with an extensive network and a strong focus on empowering MSMEs and underserved communities.

Kaman Siboro’s journey stands as living proof that with resilience, courage in the face of adversity, and unshakable integrity, big dreams can become a reality.

"Our future five years from now will be shaped by three things: the people we meet, the books we read, and how deeply we live out our integrity."
